The newly emboldened parliamentary committee faced off against the world's most powerful media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, in a series of arguments intended to find something about the phone hacking scandal that has affected Mr. Murdoch's News Corporation and Britain's political and law-enforcement leaders. In two hours of deep questioning about a very strange and unusual incident in which Mr. Murdoch was addressed with a plate filled with shaving cream, both Rupert Murdoch and his son James Murdoch stated repeatedly that they had been stunned to discover something that has become increasingly apparent: that phone hacking and other illegal behavior was widespread at their News of the World tabloid, which is now no more.
